Jacket includes GPS tracker

advertisement

Parents may worry less about losing their child -- and the kid's expensive coat -- with a new piece of winter wear that includes a global positioning tracker.

The jackets, released this week by the British clothing company Bladerunner, have a GPS tracking device in the lining. The device can track the jacket anywhere in the world, within 43 square feet.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

This might be a great item for parents to keep track of their kids but how will they like the monthly cost?

A children's tracking jacket costs $500, plus $20 a month for the tracking technology

Ouch! $500 for a child's coat? It's a great idea but only the rich and famous could do this.

How 'bout a tracking device to implant in to the kids? Or dementia affected elderly? Or my coffee mug??? :-)

    Thanks for the seed David!

For that I would pay the $20/Month. For the kid ? nah.......

Actually for an older parent....not a bad idea at all..Actually I am surprised that the cell phone bill (I assume that is the $20/Month) is that cheap.

If the jacket was cheaper, with younger kids it's not a bad price.

My guess is that cost is paying for the upfront cost. GPS cost have come way down in price and I cannot believe that the hardware (GPS + Cellphone + Small amount of Software) is that expensive. UK prices, with the high VAT and general higher cost might have an effect on this also. It would be interesting to see if anyone else looks at this market what happens to the price.
At first I somewhat brushed this thing off, however the more I think about it, the more real world us I could see for hikers, search and rescue and yes...even kids !
